“Studio Bust is giving the Venus de Milo a 21st century makeover”

- The Sunday Times Style

Artists have been capturing the female form in various mediums for centuries, but with the rise of the Body Positivity Movement, objects that celebrate the female form are now a regular feature in the modern day home, be it a peachy bottom candle or a bosom bud vase.

But now, through the use of 3D scanning and printing, you can capture and celebrate your own body with Studio Bust.

What is a Studio Bust 3D printed sculpture?

Think of it as the modern-day nude photograph Samantha Jones commissioned for herself in season 4 of Sex and the City. It’s the perfect way to celebrate your body – and it’s time to reject the notion that women need to be ashamed of their bodies, especially as they grow older.

Just like your body, our 3D printed sculptures are a piece of art. We start by 3D scanning you in person, which gives us everything we need to create a beautiful sculpture that’s an exact mini replica of your torso. Our Sculptures are designed to be displayed with pride, whether that’s front and centre on your mantelpiece, amongst treasures collected over the years on a bookshelf, or admired from the privacy of your bedroom.

What is 3D Scanning?

3D scanning is a way to map your body in 360 degrees. Our hand-held scanner uses structured-light technology to create a triangulated image of your body. During the scanning process, our specialist will walk around you several times, holding the scanner about one meter from your body, moving it up and down, whilst you hold still.

The scanner produces patterned flashes of regular white light (no laser or UV), then – similar to a camera –  it records the reflected light and stitches them together from all angles.

The History of 3D Scanning

While Bella Hadid is putting 3D scanning firmly on the fashion industry’s radar (remember that iconic spray-on skirt for the Coperni show? Or her digital avatar for Mugler in 2020?) it’s actually a concept that’s been around since the 1960s.

3D scanning started by bouncing lazer beams off an object’s surface, to measure its dimensions. Then in the 70s, structured light scanning and CT scanning emerged, which offered new ways to capture 3D data. The 80s and 90s brought further advancements in computer vision, which enhanced 3D scanning precision, so by the early 2000s it could enter the entertainment industry, transforming character and set design (hello, Barbie movie special effects).

From there, consumer-friendly 3D scanners started emerging, which led to it becoming an essential component across many industries today – from healthcare and manufacturing to architecture and design.

How does Studio Bust use 3D
Scanning and Printing?

Whether you visit us in London, or at one of our pop ups around the world, your bespoke scan is 3D printed in house, at our Hampshire Studio. All our Busts start life by being 3D printed from your bespoke scan.

At Studio Bust we use a process called FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling). This process works by melting plastic filament that is deposited, via a heated extruder, a layer at a time. Each layer hardens as it is deposited and bonds to the previous layer.

We print using super fine layers (the equivalent thickness to a strand of hair) so our Busts take between  24-56 hours to print . Once printed they require hours of hand finishing to ensure they pass our strict quality control measures. Busts in our Legacy Collection then go on to be cast in Bronze.

‘I left the appointment feeling rather liberated, if you are intrigued about getting a Bust of your body - go for it! You will not regret it.’

— Rebecca

Whether you’re body confident (or looking to seek more confidence!), pregnant, post-partum, post surgery, marking a milestone birthday or a life change, there are so many reasons to stop and take the time to celebrate your body for what it is : strong, unique and beautiful.

Just as Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag, uses her mother’s gold-bust sculpture as a sort of connection to her, our Busts are designed to empower and be shared; treasured for a lifetime and then passed on as a precious heirloom that tells the story of a moment in your life.

“My Studio Bust sculpture helps me see my body as someone else might see it, and instead of letting negative thoughts creep in, I can turn to it and feel empowered that I was bold enough to celebrate my body and all that it’s done for me.”

- Emma, 31
