Bust Portraits : Celia Muñoz

Celia Muñoz is the creative visionary behind La Coqueta, the iconic Spanish-made, London-based childrenswear brand beloved by parents around the world.

From the perfect Sunday, to the importance of communication as a working mother of five, read on to find out what makes Celia tick.

Best way to get around London?

Walking! It’s a privilege to live in Hampstead, we are surrounded by such beautiful and lush scenery, and lucky that you can find almost everything on your doorstep, or within walking distance.

Favourite time of day?

The late morning, after the children have headed off to school, brings a profound sense of calm to the household! Mornings can often feel like a whirlwind, especially with five teenagers to shepherd out the door! So, the tranquillity that follows is truly a luxury. It's a comforting moment to retreat to my home studio, indulge in a soothing Chai Tea, set a podcast playing softly in the background, and immerse myself in the creative process for La Coqueta's upcoming collection.

We’re in awe of the way you juggle 5 children and such a successful business - what are a few non-negotiables that help make it manageable?

A grounded support network and honest communication are the pillars of our family dynamic. My husband and I have defined our respective roles both at work and at home, and it's through constant and clear communication that we've managed to sustain our balance for the past 20 years. As our children grow older, they gradually take on more responsibilities and contribute to their own environments. While it's not always seamless, especially with five children so close in age (five in five years), we've learned the art of teamwork and supporting each other through every challenge.

The success of La Coqueta isn't solely attributed to one individual, but rather to a collective of women who contribute their creativity, ambition, and intelligence to drive our brand forward. It's a privilege to collaborate with such dedicated individuals who not only believe in our ethos but also actively champion it. Each year at La Coqueta surpasses the last, as we continue to evolve not only as a company but also as individuals. We foster an environment where every voice is valued, recognising that there are no bad ideas and that everyone's opinions matter. This commitment to inclusive dialogue is non-negotiable for us, ensuring that every perspective is heard and respected.

What does your ultimate Sunday look like?

The ultimate Sunday would be one spent in Granada. As a family, it’s our home away from home in the colourful Albaicín neighbourhood with such a thriving atmosphere. My parents live next door and come over often; we've spent many a Sunday with the whole family around the kitchen eating homemade paella, drinking good red wine (Spanish of course) and soaking up the views of the Alhambra.

What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

Embrace every opportunity, and everything life throws your way. As women, we often carry the weight of societal expectations, striving to fulfil numerous roles while maintaining an image of perfection. If I could advise my younger self, I would emphasise the importance of self-compassion and releasing the pressure to meet unrealistic standards. It's crucial to recognise that each journey is unique, and comparison only undermines our sense of self-worth. Instead, I would encourage myself to appreciate the beauty of my own path, celebrating victories, embracing setbacks, and savouring every moment along the way. Life is indeed a marathon, and learning to pace ourselves, finding joy in the journey, is key to lasting fulfilment and happiness.

We’d love to know more about your design process, where do you turn to for inspiration?

Absolutely everywhere. I have a pin board in my studio that’s filled with old family photos, my children’s drawings, tearings from magazines of prints and embroideries I like; it’s become a visual tapestry of creativity and nostalgia. I travel to Paris for a fabric expo each year and come back with books filled with samples and colour palettes. A lot of our inspiration comes from client feedback too, we have a number of core silhouettes, our ‘icons’ so to speak, that we evolve each season based on the honest insights we receive. The blend of personal connection, experiences, and client engagement undoubtedly adds depth and authenticity to the creative process, and finished product.

My mother in law bought my daughter a much loved piece from La Coqueta when she was born. Aside from your beautiful pieces, is there a go-to gift you bring when visiting new mamas in your life?

That is so sweet, a lot of our clients come to us through gifting! My go-to is a White Company Wellness Hamper, something for mum to enjoy whilst she is recovering, and a beautiful bouquet from my local florist in Hampstead.

I love that your Spanish heritage is so clearly reflected in your brand, please could you share a few

favourite places, restaurants and/or things to do for anyone with a trip to Spain planned this summer?

A trip to visit the Alhambra is a must-have in Granada! It’s one of the best-preserved ancient palaces of the historic Islamic world, filled with Spanish Renaissance architecture. Then stop off for an intimate dinner at Faralá, conveniently located near the Plaza Nueva which is within walking distance to the Alhambra, and have a drink in the El Quejio wine bar which is located underneath the restaurant. Discover hidden gems like the opulent baroque decor of the Basílica de San Juan de Dios, and to truly rejuvenate, treat yourself to a tranquil escape at Hammam Al Ándalus, where the centuries-old tradition of Turkish baths await.
