Bust Portraits : Alma Berrow

JOURNAL INSTAGRAM POST TEMPLATES (6).png

It is hard to believe that the highly sought-after London based artist Alma Berrow only turned her hand to ceramics a year ago.

Alma’s infamous ashtrays strewn with ceramic cigarettes, coins and even condoms sell out in mere seconds via her instagram. We particularly love her take on the 70’s cookbook style platters and recently had the pleasure of chatting with Alma about what she’s making next and why she no longer hides her most treasured possessions.

Early bird or night owl?

Depends on the day and play to be had, probably a night owl though

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A fashion designer, I studied fashion at Falmouth and left to pursue youth work and travel

Tell us about your most treasured possession.

Bambi and Bear…(teddy bears ) I've had them since the day I was born. I use to hide them and pretend to be ‘cool’ with boyfriends then realised they’re the coolest thing i have

We’re so excited you’re getting a Bust - when do you feel your most confident?

Me too! Dancing probably

Who is your hero?

Eee try not to pedestal people…but have a huge amount of respect and adoration at the moment for all my glorious female friends. Bossing life and with so much love and openness. Pretty mega to watch. Like you!

Your ceramics are certainly a huge positive to come out of life in lockdown - can you talk us through what a day in your life looks like at the moment?

I'm pretty tame and lame right now, Monday- Friday 9-7 in the studio then home, eggs and greens and sleep.

What has been your favourite project/commission that you’ve worked on to date?

Ifs and Butts- I created this for the Sotheby’s Woman (Artists) show. I pushed myself to work larger, this is something I have always struggled with. I have a tendency to draw in the corner of a page, so to triple my ceramics in size was great. Makes me want to get a larger kiln!

What are you itching to make next?

I'm in the midst of a big itch. I am preparing for the Timothy Taylor Summer Show - (IRL) In Real LIfe. For this I'm creating a whole dinner party tablescape which is something I've wanted to do for a while. The show will be opening in July and can't wait to share.
